The Pursuit of Happiness

The Pursuit of Happiness - 2023

For my foundation year's final project I created an installation inspired by Mitski's song 'Happy', taking the lyrics and visuals from the music video and imagining the events that could've happened following the video.

Within the space, I incorporated various mediums ranging from ceramics, graphic design, and 3D design to create a multi-sensory installation. To aid my work, I created a mock forensics tent in my exhibition space using painting sheets, which created a claustrophobic and clinical feeling atmosphere. Faintly in the background, I had the song playing on a loop which seemed to attract people over during the exhibition as to see what it was about.

The whole project came from me wanting to use an old 1960s fridge my grandparents had left on the farm, and my interest of using different medias to inspire and influence my work. The packaging was all designed by myself using many resources for researching old staple grocery items to surround the macabre fridge contents. Additionally, all ceramic pieces were also created by myself, with the aim of creating semi realistic meat, following from the music video's dark premise.

Following the college exhibition, my piece along with one more was chosen for a radio interview with Ffion Dafis for her art show on BBC Radio Cymru.
