A Life Once Lived

A Life Once Lived - 2021

Here is my final piece from year 12, which was based on my theme of 'A Life Once Lived' in which I studied my family history and the family farm's history. I wanted to create an installation piece inspired by the wood workshop on the farm and used many tools and various objects that I could find around the farm, giving an authentic feel in keeping with my theme.

The title 'a life once lived' came from the idea of my grandparent's lives encapsulated in one art piece, as my initial idea was a piece about their lives, but then it evolved into an observation of the farm's history and the sense of place, and the little things we leave behind after death.

The oak wood used for the base was found among the fields to bring a piece of the farm into it, literally. Many of the pieces were old tools and objects from the workshop and sheds. The calendar was opened on April 2004 as it's my birth month and the idea came to me after reading an entry in my grandfather's diary from the day. I had received a vintage single-blade razor and a 1964 Roberts radio from him and decided to incorporate these with framed drawings, and a clay model of the razor case.
