'Gris' Stage Murals

In 2021 whilst doing my A Levels, I was asked to design two stage murals for my secondary school's production of Grease, adapted to be set in the 1980s, and in Welsh. Here are some of the original sketches and digital designs I created. I was given an open brief of designing both a school and cafe/diner side that the actors could use as backdrops. In addition to designing the murals, I with a few others painted both sides with some minor design changes being made in the process.

For the cafe/diner side, they wanted to incorporate the stage stairs in some way as they were needed for the play. I had planned to paint the stairs into the design by creating painted banisters and adjoining railing behind the physical rail on the wall.

Even though the play had been adapted to be set in the 1980s rather than the 1950s I still wanted to have some classic 50s design influences. This is especially prevalent in the cafe/diner side as I combined some aspects of the quintessential 50s roadside diner with bold 80s colours, patterns and painted neon lighting.

Additionally, I created the promotional poster and pamphlet front using the digital drawing of the cafe/diner as the base for both. As well as drawing up a colour and pattern design for a themed sign in the theatre's reception.

Both murals measured in approximately H350 x W200cm.

Deren Wen

A small selection of my images from a photoshoot of a new line of skin care products for Deren Wen in 2021.

I decided to place the products within a natural stream, balanced on a slate with surrounding plants and moss to illustrate the grounded natural and clean ethos of the new line of products.
